Step 1 Rounding to the nearest ten

Step 2.  After you underline the tens column, draw a line to the ones column.  Circle that number.  Ask the circled number if it is 5 or higher.  If it is, then the number in the tens column will go up 1.  If it is not 5 or higher, then the number in the tens column will stay the same. The number that you circled will always turn to a zero.  The correct answer for the problem below would be 80.

Step 2 Rounding to the nearest ten
Here is another example of rounding to the nearest ten using a 3-digit number.

Step 1.  It is important to remember that although you are now dealing with a 3-digit number, you must underline the tens column if you are rounding to the nearest ten.

Rounding to the nearest ten Ex #2 Step 1

Step 2.  After you have located the tens column, you will draw a line to the ones column and circle the number.  If the number circled is 5 or higher, then the number in the tens column will go up 1.  If it is not, then the number in the tens column will stay the same.  The final answer below would be 640.

Day 8 (After School Work)

1.)  Put the fractions on the number line below in order from greatest to least.

Comparing Fractions on # line

*Read below before completing #2

The picture below represents 2 wholes.  It is important to understand that whenever you have a fraction that is more than 1 whole, that it is considered greater than 1.  It is very easy to identify a fraction greater than 1 because the numerator (the top number) is larger than the denominator (the bottom number).

As you can see, there are two circles (two wholes).  Each circle is cut into fourths. Therefore, the denominator will stay fourths no matter what.

The numerator, simply counts the total number of pieces altogether.  As you can see here, there are 8 total pieces that have been cut into fourths.  That is how we came to the answer 8/4.

Fractions greater than one

Let's look at the next picture below.  As you can see, it has changed.  Two of the fourths (two pieces) have been taken away. We don't have two complete wholes anymore, but we still have more than one whole, therefore our fraction is greater than one.  Notice our denominator hasn't changed because both wholes are cut into fourths.  The only thing that has changed is the numerator.  There are 6 fourths still remaining.

Fractions greater than 1 #2

2.)  In the picture above, what fraction of the pieces are missing?

Greater than 1 #3

3a.) In the picture above, what is the fraction of the pieces that still remain (green pieces)?

3b.) What is the fraction of the pieces that are missing?

Greater than 1 number #4

4a.)  In the picture above, what is the fraction of the pieces that still remain?

4b.)  What is the fraction of the pieces that are missing?

Write the following fractions in simplest form *remember to put the fraction into simplest form, all you need to do is find the largest factor that will fit into both the numerator and the denominator.

Example: 4/10 (four-tenths) will simplify into 2/5 (two fifths) because the factor of 2 is the highest factor that can go into both 4 and 10. It goes into the number 4 (two times) and it goes into the number 10 (five times). Therefore, the answer is 2/5 (two-fifths)

5a.)  3/9 (three-ninths) *hint* 3 is the highest factor that will go into both

5b.) 8/12 (eight-twelfths)

5c.) 4/6 (four-sixths)

Day 9 (After School Work)

Example Problem: The following problem is a fraction of a number that is used in a word problem.  Here is a step-by-step on how to complete it.

One-third of the 12 pencils are blue. How many pencils are blue?

Word Prob. Fractions

The first step is to realize that since the pencils are divided into thirds, there are 3 equal groups (just like a whole would be divided into 3 equal parts.)

The second step is to realize that there is 12 pencils that are divided equally into 3 equal groups. The picture below shows this.

Word Prob. Fractions Step 2

The third step is to check what question the problem is asking.  It tells us that there are 12 pencils and 1/3 of them are blue. Then asks, "How many pencils are blue?"  Check your picture.  All three groups have four pencils for a total of 12, but it tells us only 1/3 of them are blue. That means 1 out of the three groups are blue. One group (1/3) contains 4 pencils, which means that there are 4 blue pencils.

1.)  Looking at the problem above, if 2/3 of the pencils were yellow, how many pencils would be yellow?

2a.)  If there were 10 students outside, and 1/5 of them were wearing red shirts, how many students would be wearing red shirts? *Draw a picture to represent the problem.

3a.)  If Anthony bought 3 pizzas and cut them into eighths, what would the fraction be of the total number of pieces that he has?*Hint* Your fraction is greater than 1, so your numerator will be bigger than your denominator.

3c.) What fraction of the pizza is eaten?
